The issue of environmental sustainability is strongly tied to economics and politics, as this is a global issue that requires global mobilization for a more sustainable future. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an official member of the Democratic Party, although one of her strongest initiatives is environmental activism (which is the main platform of the Green Party.) Her video, A Message From the Future, is an idealistic and highly-politically charged campaign for the Green New Deal. For more information on the Green New Deal from the perspective of an environmental organization (The Sierra Club), see the link above.
Controversy.
The Green New Deal is highly controversial, mostly in the world of politics. Some of the greatest critics of it are on its direction of economic reform and of AOC herself. In a critical article by CNN (published February 14, 2019), they report that “President Donald Trump and Republicans like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell want to use the proposal to paint Democrats as trying to mandate a socialist utopia on the country, which is probably why House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been publicly skeptical -- even though most Democrats running for president have signed on, at least conceptually.”
The Trump administration, and the GOP, has been greatly criticized by liberals and environmental activists for lacking initiative in facing environmental crises -- which is unsurprising just considering the amount of tweets President Trump has written calling climate change a “hoax.”
